Located at the edge of Colorado Springs,
Sky Sox Stadium isn't regarded as being a gem of the minor
leagues, mostly due to its location -- the outskirts of
Colorado Springs -- and atmosphere -- strictly utilitarian.
Technically speaking, Sky Sox Stadium doesn't meet current
Class AAA guidelines for new stadiums: it only has 6,000 fixed
seats (current guidelines call for 10,000), and while it has
18 luxury suites, it doesn't have the usual amenities found in
other Class AAA ballparks, which is why Sky Sox management has
been seeking a new ballpark. It's not a surprise that the Sky
Sox' average attendance in 2002 was 3,927; only the Calgary
Cannons (since departed for Albuquerque) drew fewer fans in
the Pacific Coast League.
The price tag for Sky Sox Stadium was
$3.7 million.
