Post-Tribune: Taxpayers forced to pay to play

The city of Gary is paying the Gary SouthShore RailCats $2.2 million because
the city's new stadium wasn't completed for play in 2002. Team officials say
that the RailCats still lost money in 2002 despite having no home-ballpark
expenses.

Post-Tribune: Private contract building stadium restaurant

From what I can gather, there's a controversy in Gary because the new
stadium will include a restaurant that was leased by the Gary SouthShore
RailCats (independent; Northern League) without a public bid process.

The Gary Southshore RailCats (independent; Northern League) held an open
house to promote their new stadium yesterday. The RailCats certainly have
the support of the media, but the team has sold only 150 season tickets; I
certainly hope they can do better and silence the folks who said that $45
million was too much to pay for a Northern League stadium.

I am more than a little surprised that the Gary SouthShore RailCats
(independent; Northern League) have only sold 150 season tickets for 2003,
given that the team has already played for a year and the new $45-million
stadium has received a ton of press both locally and nationally. By
comparison, the Lake County Captains, the new Class A team in Eastlake that
will begin play in 2003, has sold over 1,000 season tickets.
