The
Clinton County Gaming Association has pledged $2 million to Clinton's
Vision Iowa project, which should make it easier to get a matching grant
from the state Vision Iowa Board. Part of the proceeds will be used to
upgrade and renovate Alliant Energy Field, home of the Clinton LumberKings
(Class A; Midwest League), as well as fund other city improvements.

A
Clinton, Iowa, couple has given $100,000 towards the city's Vision Iowa project.
The city of Clinton is seeking a combination of public and private funds for
a variety of city-improvements projects -- one of them being a renovation of
Alliant Energy Field, home of the
Clinton LumberKings (Class A; Midwest League). There's still some animosity
towards the Clinton Vision Iowa project, as residents wonder if it's
appropriate to put public funds into a ballpark renovation. Alliant Energy
Field is one of the oldest stadiums in the minors and in sore need of a
facelift.

Voters in Clinton rejected a tax plan that would have replaced Alliant
Energy Field, home of the Clinton LumberKings (Class A; Midwest League), and
that might have been a blessing for those of us who love the old WPA-era
ballparks you still find scattered across the minors: "Sitting in the
half-full stadium on a hazy summer afternoon, watching the LumberKings take
on the Kane County Cougars, visitors get the same lazy feeling as sitting at
home on a screened-in porch, watching the neighbor kids play kickball in the
street."

Clinton voters defeated a special referendum to fund a renovation of
Riverview Stadium, home of the Clinton Lumber Kings (Class A; Midwest
League) as part of a larger redevelopment project. The referendum,
which garnered just 47 percent of the votes cast (it required 60 percent to
pass), would have granted county commissioners the power to issue matching
fund for the project, a move required as part of the larger Vision Iowa
state redevelopment project.
